[ET Net News Agency, 19 April 2018] Daiwa Research said the US government's ban on the
sale of software and parts to ZTE (00763) could have ripple effects on the timetable for
adoption of 5G.
It noted that ZTE has recently announced it will conduct joint 5G trials this year with
Chinese mobile operators and is pushing for 5G smartphones by late 2018 or early 2019. The
research house said these plans now stand to be disrupted unless a settlement could be
made soon.
Daiwa said delays in 5G on one hand is a positive for telecoms players globally, as it
pushes out their capex cycle, but it also poses tail risks for Chinese telecoms operators.
One scenario that could come into play is higher capital spending to support local
players, as China looks inward to replenish its supply chains.
But Daiwa believes that the current trade impasse will be resolved through negotiations
down the line. (KL)
