New claims for US unemployment benefits increased 17,000 to a seasonally adjusted 283,000 for the week ended 18 October, the Labor Department said.
The four-week moving average of claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it irons out week-to-week volatility, fell to its lowest level since May 2000.
Continuing jobless claims fell to 2.351 million in the week ended 11 October from 2.389 million in the preceding week.
