The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 261,000 for the week ended 20 August, the Labor Department said.
It was the third straight weekly decline in claims.
The four-week moving average of claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it irons out week-to-week volatility, fell 1,250 to 264,000 last week.
Continuing claims dropped 30,000 to 2.15 million in the week ended 31 August.
