New applications for US jobless benefits rose 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 244,000 for the week ended 15 April, the Labor Department said.
The four-week moving average of claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it irons out week-to-week volatility, fell 4,250 to 243,000 last week.
Continuing claims decreased 49,000 to 1.98 million in the week ended 8 April, which was the lowest reading since April 2000.
