The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits increased 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 249,000 for the week ended 11 November, the Labor Department said.
The four-week moving average of initial claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it irons out week-to-week volatility, rose 6,500 to 237,750 last week.
Continuing claims dropped 44,000 to 1.86 million in the week ended 4 November, the lowest level since December 1973.
