US releases new home sales data, Xi-Trump meeting at the White House

  {Economic Information Agency 24th special report} Yesterday, all three major US stock indices fell. Market concerns over rising US bond yields and oil prices, coupled with investors' worries that the Fed might further tighten monetary policy, weighed on tech stocks. The Dow closed down 352.1 points, or 0.68%, at 51,511.59 points; the S&P 500 dropped 58.59 points, or 0.75%, to 7,706.05 points; the Nasdaq fell 308.24 points, or 1.13%, to 26,936.04 points. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index closed at 24,761, down 72 points or 0.3%, with turnover of HK$159.6 billion.

  Regarding major economic events around the world, at 8:00pm Hong Kong time (same below), Richmond Federal Reserve Bank President Barkin will participate in a fireside chat at the Economic Club. At 8:50pm, Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank President Mester will deliver opening remarks at a conference. At 9:30pm, Bank of England Deputy Governor Broadbent will hold a fireside chat with David Aikman, Director of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), at the London Macro Policy Forum. At 10:10pm, Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank President Patrick Harker will deliver opening remarks and participate in discussions at a fintech conference. At 10:45pm, European Central Bank Supervisory Board member Montaner will participate in a fireside chat at a conference. The meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Trump will take place at 11:30pm at the White House, where artificial intelligence (AI) development and security issues are expected to be among the key topics.

  On the data front, at 8:30pm tonight, the US will release continuing jobless claims, expected to rise from 1.73 million to 1.74 million; initial jobless claims are expected to increase from 196,000 to 200,000. At 10:00pm, the US will release August new home sales, forecast to rise from 607,000 to 616,000, with the monthly rate expected to improve from a decline of 10.5% to a rise of 1.3%. At 11:00pm, the US will release the September Kansas City Federal Reserve Manufacturing Index, expected to decline from 10 to 9.
