In a statement, Morgan Stanley said it takes client information confidentiality extremely seriously, "has swiftly taken measures to address this unintentional information leak, and continues to communicate with relevant parties."
Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that the leaked document includes initial public offering (IPO) candidates from China, South Korea, India, and other locations. The list primarily covers the Asia region but also includes projects in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, along with private equity funds and pension funds supporting these companies, as well as shelved projects.
The report said Mohamed Atmani, Morgan Stanley's Head of Financial Sponsors Group for Investment Banking in the Asia-Pacific region, had intended to send a client version of the document this week containing updates on the private equity sector and recent transactions, but mistakenly sent the internal version, which contained a large amount of price-sensitive information. He subsequently attempted to recall the email. Atmani, a Managing Director based in Hong Kong, has not yet responded to requests for comment.
The report indicated that the document has circulated among competitors, and some bankers at other institutions are reportedly using the list to target transactions and pursue potential clients. However, some said most of the deals on the list were already known, offering little surprise. (rc)
