Kansas City Fed President delivers speech, U.S. releases UMich consumer sentiment index
《Economic Intelligence News Service, 25th, Special Report》U.S. major stock indices diverged yesterday (24th), with the Dow Jones Industrial Average declining for the third consecutive trading day. Rising long-term U.S. Treasury yields to over 20-year highs, coupled with oil prices climbing again, continued to weigh on markets; however, market optimism that the U.S. and Iran may make progress in reopening the Strait of Hormuz and easing tensions helped U.S. stocks rebound from intraday lows. The Dow Jones closed down 161.61 points or 0.31%, at 51,349.98 points; the S&P 500 fell 1.9 points or 0.02%, closing at 7,704.13 points; the Nasdaq edged up 3.34 points or 0.01%, ending at 26,939.37 points. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index closed at 24,510, down 251 points or 1%, with turnover of HK$102.2 billion.
Regarding important economic events globally, at 8:15pm Hong Kong time tonight, Chair of the European Central Bank's Supervisory Board, Daniele Nouy, will participate in a panel discussion. At 9:20pm, Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank President Schmid will deliver a speech on "The Fed, Financial Innovation, and the Economic Outlook." At 2:00am on the 26th, ECB Vice-President Vujcic will join a policy panel discussion; simultaneously, Cleveland Federal Reserve Bank President Mester will participate in a policy panel discussion.
On the data front, at 8:30pm tonight, the U.S. will release August durable goods orders, expected to reverse from 1.1% to a decline of 0.3%. At 10:00pm, the U.S. will release the September University of Michigan consumer sentiment index, forecast to drop from 51.7 to 47.5. (wa)
