Big Four banks drop about 1% as Xi-Trump meeting remains positive but high U.S. bond yields expose risks

Economic Information Daily (September 25 Special Report): CCB (00939) H-shares are down 1.2%, trading at HK$9.565, with approximately 7.65 million shares traded, involving HK$731.6 million.

On the evening of September 24 in the United States, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan attended a welcome banquet hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife Melania at the White House. Prior to the banquet, Xi delivered a speech thanking the U.S. side for their warm hospitality. Xi stated that this meeting allowed for "frank and in-depth exchanges" with President Trump, reaching many new consensuses, enriching the content of constructive strategic stability in China-U.S. relations, and providing new strategic guidance for bilateral ties.

However, despite the positive atmosphere of the Xi-Trump meeting, global risk appetite has further declined, triggering a sell-off in global bond markets. The yield on 30-year U.S. Treasury bonds hit a more than 20-year high, while the U.S. Treasury's long-term bond buyback operation on Thursday fell short of the $6 billion cap, below market expectations.

Mainland banking stocks generally weakened; ICBC (01398) fell 1.4% to HK$7.555; Bank of China (03988) dropped 1.2% to HK$5.965; ABC (01288) declined 0.8% to HK$6.555; Bank of Communications (03328) fell 1.1% to HK$8.195; Postal Savings Bank (01658) dipped 0.3% to HK$5.405.
