The Dow Jones closed up 478.64 points, or 0.93%, at 51,828.62 points; the S&P 500 rose 39.28 points, or 0.51%, to 7,743.41 points; the Nasdaq gained 129.34 points, or 0.48%, to 27,068.72 points.
For the full week, the Dow Jones fell 0.3% cumulatively, while the S&P 500 rose 1.2% and the Nasdaq gained 2%.
Microsoft (US.MSFT) rose 3.7%, mainly driven by news of new programming tools and a 24/7 AI agent feature added to Copilot. Meta (US.META) fell 3.3%, although the stock gained about 13% for the week, with market attention continuing on the development of its AI agent product Muse.
Other large tech stocks: SpaceX (US.SPCX) rose 0.4%, Tesla (US.TSLA) dropped 1.5%, NVIDIA (US.NVDA) rose 0.2%, Apple (US.AAPL) rose 1.5%, and Google (US.GOOG) rose 0.6%.
Regarding Middle East developments, U.S. President Trump said he rejected Iran's recent proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but expected U.S.-Iran talks to resume this week. Brent crude futures were last at USD 106.11 per barrel, up about 1.76%; NYMEX crude futures were at USD 93.41, up about 1%.
The yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury rose, last at 5.2%, with high interest rates continuing to exert some pressure on the stock market.
In the foreign exchange market, the dollar index declined on Friday, with the DXY around 100.97, down 0.2%. The yen strengthened against the dollar. USD/JPY briefly rose to 158.85, now at 157.46. EUR/USD traded in a narrow range, hovering around 1.137.
In the commodities market, gold prices stabilized but were affected by a relatively strong dollar and rising expectations of U.S. rate hikes; spot gold rose about 0.3% to around USD 4,289 per ounce; NYMEX gold futures rose about 0.6% to around USD 4,327. (yc, kk)
