HSI rises 156 points to 24,666 in morning session, northbound funds back in play with Chinese A-share names leading gains, though overall turnover remains weak

    {Economic Information Daily, 28th} Amidst观望 on the new round of US-Iran talks and several重磅 US economic data releases, turnover on the main board reached nearly HK$94.8 billion in the morning session, falling short of the HK$100 billion mark. Stock Connect resumed trading, with some Chinese A-share names in demand. The Hang Seng Index closed the morning session at 24,666, up 156 points or 0.6%. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index stood at 8,212, up 46 points or 0.6%. The Hang Seng Tech Index was at 4,288, down 23 points or 0.5%.

    With northbound funds back in the market, mainland bank stocks led the gains. ICBC (01398) rose 2.4% to HK$7.695, CCB (00939) gained 1.89% to HK$9.715, BOC (03988) climbed 1.67% to HK$6.08, and ABC (01288) edged up 0.38% to HK$6.54. China Shenhua (01088) rose 2.15% to HK$44.7, China Resources Land (01109) gained 2.72% to HK$29.42, PetroChina (00857) surged 4.04% to HK$9.79, and CNOOC (00883) advanced 1.62% to HK$23.78.

    AI hardware stocks were under pressure. Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable (06869) plunged 13.83% to HK$160.7, Zhongji Innolight (03308) dropped 9.39% to HK$1,061, Sunway Technology (02476) fell 9.49% to HK$195.5, Hua Hong Semiconductor (01347) declined 4.8% to HK$105.1, and Lenovo Group (00992) slid 4.52% to HK$35.48. Reports indicated China has approved leading tech firms to purchase advanced Nvidia chips, yet GPU-related Biren Technology (06082) tumbled 8.07% to HK$35.08, and TianShu ZhiXin (09903) dropped 8.04% to HK$113.2.

    Tech and internet stocks traded mixed. Alibaba (09988) fell 1.48% to HK$106.8, Baidu (09888) dipped 0.12% to HK$85.2, Meituan (03690) edged up 0.14% to HK$71.75, Tencent (00700) rose 0.87% to HK$440.4. NetEase (09999) led the blue chips with a 4.42% gain, closing at HK$188.9.
    
    The top three most actively traded HSI constituents were Tencent, Alibaba, and SMIC. The top three most actively traded Tech Index constituents were Tencent, Zhipu (02513), and Alibaba, with Zhipu closing at HK$620.5, down 2.1%. (ey)
