US rejects Iran's proposal to reopen Strait of Hormuz, Xi-Trump meeting reaches eight-point consensus, reports say China eases restrictions on buying Nvidia chips

【Headlines Summary】

1. After the Xi-Trump meeting, both China and the US released lists of outcomes from the summit, with both sides mentioning agreement to build a "constructive strategic stability relationship based on mutual respect, fairness, and reciprocity," establishing a US-China AI dialogue, and reaching an arrangement for reciprocal tariff reductions of approximately $30 billion. The White House's list also includes advancing the establishment of a trade council and an investment council, forming an agricultural market access working group, continuing consultations on rare earths and other critical mineral supplies, and China's commitment to import at least 10 million tons of US coal in both 2027 and 2028.

2. Trump stated he will meet again with Xi Jinping during the APEC summit in China in November and the G20 meeting in Miami in December. US Ambassador to China R. Nicholas Burns said that US policy toward Taiwan remains unchanged after the summit, and consultations on arms sales to Taiwan will continue.

3. The US President rejected a proposal from Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said the deal Iran seeks might have been acceptable to the US about a year ago, and expects US-Iran talks to resume this week. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi said there is currently no reason to re-engage with the Trump administration and vowed firm resistance against any aggression.

4. The yield on the US 30-year Treasury bond briefly rose above 5.5% last Friday, causing the market to lose a reference benchmark. Market analysts warn that yields could continue to rise.

5. On Friday (25th), all three major US stock indices rose. AI-related stocks performed well, and falling oil prices improved market risk appetite. Microsoft's stock surged over 3%, becoming one of the main drivers of the market rally. Investors are also closely watching follow-up developments from the US-China summit and news on US-Iran talks. The Dow closed up 478.64 points, or 0.93%, at 51,828.62; the S&P 500 rose 39.28 points, or 0.51%, to 7,743.41; the Nasdaq gained 129.34 points, or 0.48%, to 27,068.72. The Nikkei opened at 66,552, up 188 points.

6. US Treasury Secretary Bessent said economic pressure is working, with Iran having only 15 million barrels of oil left at sea, which may be delivered to China in the final batch within two weeks.

7. It is reported that the US government is discussing multiple measures to curb the surge in diesel prices, including suspending the federal diesel excise tax and relaxing sales restrictions on off-road tax-exempt red diesel typically used in agriculture. Trump said he is "very seriously" considering banning diesel exports.

8. US consumer confidence fell to a four-month low in September, as households' concerns about rising prices and the economic outlook intensified. The University of Michigan's survey showed the final September consumer sentiment index was 48.1, lower than August's 51.7, but slightly higher than the preliminary reading of 47.8 released earlier in the month.

9. Core capital goods orders in the US rose 1.6% in August, exceeding market expectations, continuing the strong trend of capital investment driven by AI-related spending this year.

10. Solidigm, the US NAND flash memory and SSD business under SK Hynix (US.SKHY), is considering an initial public offering (IPO) in the US as early as 2027, with a potential valuation of up to $150 billion, according to three sources cited by Reuters.

11. Reports indicate the Chinese government has signaled it may allow companies such as Alibaba and ByteDance to purchase Nvidia's (US.NVDA) high-end graphics processing chip RTX Pro 5500, released this month.

12. HKEX's (00388) derivatives clearing house will accept Chinese government bonds, policy bank bonds, and Ministry of Finance offshore bonds as eligible non-cash collateral starting November. Additionally, the Securities and Futures Commission stated it has already engaged with mainland authorities regarding extending stock market trading hours.
