ETONNEWS (29th special report) Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed an executive order on Monday (28th) to suspend the state's fuel tax starting from midnight Tuesday local time for a period of 30 days, in response to soaring oil prices triggered by U.S.-Iran tensions.
Georgia's motor fuel excise tax is 33.3 cents per gallon for gasoline and 37.3 cents per gallon for diesel. The new measure will reduce the state's monthly tax revenue by approximately $200 million.
Kemp also suspended weight restrictions for commercial vehicles to lower freight transportation costs.
The current average gasoline price in Georgia is $4.19 per gallon, nearly 30 cents lower than the national average. According to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA), the state's average gasoline price last year was $2.88. Georgia's average diesel price is $6.35 per gallon, about 20 cents lower than the national average. (yc)
