U.S. initial jobless claims fell to 197,000 last week, below expectations

    HONG KONG, Sept 2 (Economic Information Agency) The U.S. Labor Department reported that, for the week ended September 26, the number of initial jobless claims decreased by 1,000 from the previous week to 197,000, lower than the market expectation of 200,000; the previous figure was revised from 197,000 to 198,000.

    The data showed that layoffs in the U.S. labor market remain limited. The four-week moving average of initial jobless claims stood at 200,000 during the period, down 2,500 from the prior week.

    Additionally, for the week ended September 19, the number of continuing claims for unemployment benefits was 1.701 million, lower than the market expectation of approximately 1.725 million. (kk)
