Amazon Plans to Move $8 Billion in Nvidia Chips Off Balance Sheet

According to a report by Economic Information Daily on the 2nd, the Financial Times reported that Amazon is exploring a transaction to move approximately $8 billion worth of top-tier Nvidia chips off its balance sheet, aiming to reduce balance sheet pressure and make its AI infrastructure development more asset-light.

Under the current proposed plan, Amazon will transfer thousands of Grace Blackwell chips into a special purpose vehicle (SPV), which will hold these chip assets.

These chips are currently being used in data centers across the United States. After the transfer is completed, Amazon will not cease using the related equipment, but instead will lease the chips back from the SPV and continue using them for its own AI and cloud computing operations.

This means Amazon is attempting to transform large-scale AI chip investments that would otherwise be directly recorded as capital expenditures into a financing model of "externally held assets with Amazon leasing long-term." (yc)
