Takagi Sanae: Lowering consumption tax is to cope with rising prices, no special bonds to be issued for this purpose

The Nikkei Economics and Business News Agency reported on the 5th that Japanese Prime Minister Takagi Sanae delivered a policy speech at the plenary session of the House of Representatives on Monday. Regarding the reduction of consumption tax on food and beverages from 8% to 1% starting next April, Takagi stated that she would not rely on issuing special bonds to ensure funding, in order to gain market confidence.

Takagi said the reduction in consumption tax is aimed at coping with rising prices and alleviating the burden on low- and middle-income groups, "hoping to ease household finances a little bit."

She also stated that a five-year domestic investment plan will be formulated within the year, covering economic stability, cybersecurity, and industries such as artificial intelligence and semiconductors, to achieve a strong economy.

Regarding the rise in long-term government bond yields and the depreciation of the yen, Takagi said, "If market movements deviate from expectations, we will flexibly take necessary measures as required."

On foreign policy, Takagi described China as "an important neighbor" and said Japan will comprehensively advance a "strategic mutually beneficial relationship." She clearly stated, "We will promote dialogue to safeguard national interests and build a constructive and stable relationship." Regarding maritime disputes between China and Japan, Takagi said, "We will state our position and strongly urge responsible actions." (yc)
