France sees wave of student protests, high school students across multiple regions block campuses over dissatisfaction with government's education spending cuts

ETNET NEWS AGENCY (5th exclusive) France has seen a wave of student protests, with high school students in various regions blocking campuses since last Thursday (1st), opposing the government's cuts to education spending and public service budgets, triggering clashes between students and police. By Monday, as many as 500 high schools across France had to partially or fully close, suspending classes.

The protests have spread from Paris to cities such as Nantes, Marseille, and Montpellier. Students criticized the government for cutting education spending and redirecting funds to military purposes, resulting in deteriorating learning environments, teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, dilapidated school buildings, poor hygiene, and unbearable conditions during heatwaves.

Clashes between protesting students and police have led to over 5,000 students being arrested in recent days, with 85% of them being minors.

The French National Assembly will begin deliberating the budget bill next Tuesday (13th). Currently, France faces debt issues and political uncertainty, and with this wave of student protests, the budget bill has drawn even greater attention. (yc)
