According to Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, private equity giant Bain Capital is exploring an investment in Hong Kong property giant New World Development, to assist the debt-stressed developer in raising funds and reducing its debt burden. The report indicated that Bain Capital has been evaluating potential deal structures, which may involve the company's controlling shareholder, the Cheng family, injecting fresh capital into the company. However, discussions are still ongoing, and it remains uncertain whether Bain Capital will ultimately proceed with the investment.
Representatives of Bain Capital declined to comment on the related rumors, while spokespersons for New World Development and the Cheng family did not respond.
Currently, the Hang Seng Index stands at 23,878, down 93 points or 0.4%, with trading volume on the main board reaching nearly HK$7.3 billion. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index is at 7,992, down 37 points or 0.5%. The Hang Seng Tech Index is at 4,125, down 32 points or 0.8%. (nw)
