On October 2, the government announced that it has formally reached a settlement arrangement with MTR Corporation Limited (MTR) regarding disputes over delays in the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link (XRL) and the Sha Tin to Central Link (SCL) projects. Concerning delays in the construction phase of the Hong Kong section of the high-speed rail, MTR will pay the government HK$2.25 billion.
MTR's announcement stated that it has assessed the potential financial impact of the aforementioned exceptional matters and expects these matters will not have a significant financial impact on the company. The company also expects to recognize the settlement amount for the high-speed rail (Hong Kong section) as an expense in its consolidated income statement for the current fiscal year. Regarding the SCL agreement, the company had previously made a provision of HK$2 billion for costs related to the Hung Hom incident. However, according to the SCL settlement deed, since neither party is required to make any settlement payment, if there are no significant additional costs arising from the retained obligations of the SCL project as described above, the company expects the remaining provision of approximately HK$600 million will be reversed to the consolidated income statement at an appropriate time.
Currently, the Hang Seng Index stands at 23,935, down 36 points or 0.2%, with main board turnover of nearly HK$42.7 billion. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index is at 8,021, down 9 points or 0.1%. The Hang Seng Tech Index is at 4,175, up 17 points or 0.4%. (hc)
