*Publicly Shouted Down Deputy Secretary*
According to sources cited in the report, during a Treasury Department meeting in January, Bessent loudly berated Deputy Secretary Hurley (John Hurley) in front of numerous subordinates, using vulgar language so loudly that employees in nearby offices could hear.
A few weeks later, Bessent discussed with his staff finding a position outside the Treasury Department for Hurley. Hurley was eventually reassigned as U.S. Ambassador to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.
*Fear of Bessent Spreads, Dozens Resign*
But this was only one example. The report cited data showing that by the end of August, seven Treasury officials confirmed by the Senate had already left. In contrast, during the same period in the past four administrations, no more than two had departed. Dozens of Treasury officials not confirmed by the Senate also successively resigned. Many others, intimidated by Bessent, have abandoned plans to join the Treasury Department.
*Bessent Still Entrusted with Heavy Responsibilities by Trump*
Nevertheless, Trump still places great hopes on Bessent, entrusting him with major tasks including handling high borrowing costs, inflation, government debt, and using economic means to end the U.S.-Iran war—yet no results have been achieved so far, shaking market confidence.
Whether Bessent can 'accomplish his mission' remains to be seen over time, but a senior government official who once worked with him said that Trump has almost bet the entire economic policy on him, thus 'Bessent cannot fail'. (yc)
