The number of new unemployment claims in the U.S. last week dropped to 197,000

The Economic Information Agency reported on the 9th that the U.S. Department of Labor announced that, for the week ending October 3, the number of new unemployment claims was 197,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week, lower than the market expectation of 200,000; the previous figure was revised to 199,000.

During the period, the four-week moving average of new unemployment claims was 198,000, a decrease of 2,500 from the previous week, indicating that recent layoffs remain at a low level. The number of continuing unemployment claims was 1,716,000, an increase of 17,000 from the previous week, higher than the market expectation of 1.7 million.

The data shows that U.S. companies currently have low intentions to lay off employees, and the labor market maintains a certain level of resilience. However, the non-farm payroll data released earlier showed that only 29,000 new jobs were added in September, and the unemployment rate rose to 4.2%, indicating that hiring activity has also clearly slowed down.
