The data showed that the number of Japanese corporate bankruptcies with liabilities exceeding 10 million yen reached 5,373, an increase of 3.8% compared to the same period last year, marking the fifth consecutive year of year-on-year growth. The total liabilities of these companies rose 23.5% year-on-year to 856.169 billion yen.
By industry, out of the 10 industries covered in the survey, six saw an increase in the number of bankruptcies compared to the same period last year. The service industry recorded the highest number of bankruptcies with 1,828 companies, up 3.7% year-on-year; the construction industry ranked second with 1,035 bankruptcies.
In terms of causes of bankruptcy, 240 companies went bankrupt due to labor shortages, an increase of 17.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching a record high; 436 companies went bankrupt due to rising prices, up 17.8% year-on-year.
Tokyo Shoko Research stated that as interest rates rise and the year-end approaches, corporate funding needs are increasing, suggesting that the number of corporate bankruptcies may further increase in the second half of the fiscal year. (rc)
