Preliminary estimates released by Counterpoint Research show that due to shortages in memory chip supplies and surging costs, smartphone manufacturers have raised product prices, leading to a 20% year-on-year decline in global smartphone shipments in the third quarter, the lowest third-quarter level since 2012.
Samsung maintained its leading position in the smartphone market with a 23% market share, supported by demand for its Galaxy Z Fold8 series and stable component supply, although its shipments this quarter declined by 3% compared to the same period last year; Apple (US.AAPL) achieved a market share of 22%, breaking the 20% threshold for the first time in the third quarter.
Counterpoint noted that because Apple has not yet launched the base model of iPhone 18, the sales volume in the month of iPhone 18's release was lower than that of the full series of iPhone 17 models launched a year ago.
For Chinese smartphone brands, both OPPO and vivo saw shipment declines exceeding 20%, while Xiaomi's (01810) shipment volume dropped more than 30%, with its market share falling to 10%. Xiaomi reduced its focus on low-end models and certain overseas markets to protect its profit margins.
