Global inflation for this year is estimated at 4.7%, unchanged from the July forecast. The 2027 estimate is projected to decline to 4.1%, higher than the previous update of 4%.
The IMF stated that the investment boom in artificial intelligence (AI) has offset the drag from Middle East conflicts in certain economies. The IMF noted that rerouting oil supplies to bypass the Strait of Hormuz and releasing strategic energy stockpiles have helped contain the impact of U.S.-Iran tensions on oil prices. Over the past six months, global growth has withstood the test of Middle East conflicts, performing better than earlier concerns.
However, the IMF also warned that as emergency oil stockpiles continue to dwindle and government budgets become strained, if supply capacity is not strengthened and policy buffers replenished, the global economy could soon test the limits of its resilience.
The IMF also forecasts global economic growth of 3.4% in 2027, unchanged from the July projection, while simultaneously warning that global economic "risks are skewed to the downside," with the threat of prolonged stalemate or further escalation in the Middle East potentially leading to higher energy and food prices.
