The core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, rose 2.6% year-on-year, exceeding the market expectation of 2.5% and up from 2.4% in August, reaching the highest level since June; on a month-on-month basis, it rose 0.3%, also higher than the market expectation of 0.2%, and unchanged from August's increase.
Energy prices were one of the main factors pushing inflation higher. In September, gasoline prices surged 9.1% month-on-month, driving the energy index up 5.2%, with gasoline alone accounting for more than half of the overall monthly CPI increase; the housing index rose 0.4%. Overall food prices were flat. (kk)
