It was reported that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a notice requiring the removal of Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) model DeepSeek and third-party services developed using this model from information technology systems of U.S. federal civilian agencies.
DHS also prohibits U.S. federal civilian agencies from procuring DeepSeek products and third-party services developed based on DeepSeek. DHS stated that the DeepSeek model poses multiple threat pathways and expressed concerns that using the product could lead to sensitive data being transmitted to China, particularly in cases where U.S. government employees or contractors use the related products. This could generate actionable intelligence regarding U.S. individuals and/or government agencies; meanwhile, these models themselves might contain malware or other security vulnerabilities.
Previously, several U.S. government agencies, including the Department of Commerce and the Navy, had already banned the use of DeepSeek on government devices. Multiple states, including New York, Tennessee, and Virginia, have also taken similar measures.
