　　有人說，與人交談就好像在打乒乓球，要「有來有往」，你一言我一語才算是有效的互動。在職場上，當別人跟你說話的時候，其實你理應作出適當的回應，好讓對方知道你在細心聆聽並且接收到有關訊息。當要表示自己了解對方的說話時，不少人都會以「我明白」和「我理解」作回應。那麼，如果要以英文表達「我明白」或「我理解」某件事情時，你又會怎麼說呢？你是否只會說”I understand”？當上司問你“Get the picture？” 時，千萬別以為他在問你「拿到照片了嗎」。那麼，“get the picture"是甚麼意思？

 

　　本周，大家一起學習如何用英文表示自己理解或不理解某件事情。不想說來說去都只有”I understand “和 “I don’t understand “ 的話，就馬上學起來吧！

 

1. Get/Catch the drift of ...... (+Noun)

理解......的含義/明白......的要旨

"Get/Catch the drift"的"drift"意思是「要旨」、「含義」。

 

例句1：

If I get the drift of what you're telling us, it seems like the project is going to cost more than we thought. Am I right? 

如果我理解你的意思，這個項目的成本似乎比我們想像的要高，對嗎？

 

例句2：

Do you catch my drift? Should I explain it again?

你明白我的意思嗎？我需要再解釋一遍嗎？

 

2. I get the message. 

我領悟/知悉/理解了

Do you get the message?

明白我的意思嗎？（=“Do you understand?”）

例句2：

A：Actually, I'm not interested in talking about my previous （以前的）boss.

其實我沒興趣談論我以前的老闆。

B：OK, I get the message. Let's talk about your new job.

好的，我知道了。讓我們談談你的新工作吧。

 

3. I realize(d) that...... (+SV)

我意識到......

 

“I realize that”常用於有點嚴肅的場合。

 

例句1：

I realize that it may be difficult to *put yourself into someone else's shoes, but sometimes it is just what one needs to do.

我意識到對你來説換位思考可能有點難度，但有時這正是我們需要學習的。

 

*put yourself into someone else's shoes=換位思考

這裡的"shoes"只是比喻，實際意思為"place"，指的就是「他人的處境/角度」。

 

例句2：

I realize that it is hard for new employees to orient （定位）themselves in an ongoing （進行中的）project.

我意識到新員工難以在進行中的項目中定位自己。

 

4. I manage(d) to grasp ...... (+Noun)

我掌握了......

 

“I manage to grasp” 常用於表示較難理解的概念。

 

例句：

I finally managed to grasp a better understanding of the various marketing concepts （營銷概念）that have been taught by my manager.

我終於掌握了經理教授我們的各種營銷概念。

 

5. I can/can’t make sense of ...... (+Noun)

我懂/不懂......

“Make sense of” 常用於表示理解一些自己不清楚或較複雜的事情。

 

例句：

I'm afraid I can't make sense of what you've written.  Do you mind rephrasing (重新表述) your question so that we can try to help you?

恐怕我無法理解你寫的東西。你介意重新表述你的問題，以便我們可以幫助你嗎？

 

6. Comprehend (v.)

理解

 

例句1：

Can you comprehend this theory（理論）?

你能理解這個理論嗎？

 

例句2：

I failed to comprehend why he is having an issue （有問題）on the matter. 

我不明白他為甚麼在這件事上會有問題。

 

7. I get the picture.

我理解了

 

“I get the picture” 常用於表示了解到一個較糟糕的情況。

 

例句1：

I've been doing a lot of reading and researching since last week, and I get the picture now. Thank you for your help.

自上週以來，我不斷在閱讀和搜集資料。現在我明白了，感謝你的幫忙。

例句2：

Get the picture? Our company doesn't need lazy people.

你明白嗎？我們公司不需要懶惰的人。
