【加速理解】甚麼是Collocations?15個極常使用的商用搭配字詞(上)

  這篇文章將介紹商務專業人士常用的15個英語詞語搭配。在正式步入重點前,讓我們先說說英文裏的「collocations」是甚麼。在學習英文的過程中,如果想提升自己的productive skills,也就是加強寫作與口說能力,讓自己能更像該語言的母語者,那麼必不可忽略的一環就是搭配字詞(collocations)。

 

  根據牛津線上辭典的詞條釋義,「collocations」在語言學領域中,是指「該語言中經常出現的單詞組合」。簡而言之,就是一個字出現的時候,依照習慣通常會搭配一個或多個特定的字,例如:「do + business(做生意)」和「chair+a meeting(主持會議)」。

 

  搭配字詞很重要嗎?精通搭配字詞不但有助於增加詞彙量,更有助提升我們的口語能力以及閱讀和聽力理解能力。在聽力理解能力方面,如果我們熟悉大量的詞語搭配的話,在聽到一個單字時,就定能快速地猜測及聯想到它的搭配字,進而加速理解。

 

  本周,筆者先爲大家介紹15個使用頻率很高的商用「動詞+名詞」詞組:

 

 Verb(動詞)+Noun(名詞) 的 Collocations:

 

1. Do business (做生意;開展業務)

 

Example:

If you want to do business in other countries, it is imperative you understand how they do business. 

如果你想在其他國家做生意的話,則必須了解他們如何開展業務。

 

2. Break off negotiations(中斷談判)

 

Example:

The parties are no longer free to break off negotiations abruptly(突然地) and without justification(沒有理由;無故). 

各方不再有理由無故突然中斷談判。

 

3. Cease trading(停止交易)

 

Example:

My personal view is that we should cease trading.

我個人認為我們應該停止交易。

 

4. Chair a meeting(主持會議)

 

Example:

Please chair the sales meeting in room 204 on Monday. 

星期一請於204號房主持銷售會議。

 

5. Close a deal(達成交易;完成交易)

Example:

You should close the deal on the first visit.

你須在第一次探訪達成交易。

 

6. Launch a new product(推出新產品)

 

Example:

If you're going to launch a new product, you need to make sure you have a successful launch strategy in place. 

如果你要發佈新產品,則需要確保自己已製定成功的發佈策略。

 

7. Lay off staff(裁員)

 

Example:

ABC Airways will lay off staff as the coronavirus pandemic has largely grounded the global aviation industry.

由於冠狀病毒大流行已經使全球航空業紮根,ABC航空公司將裁員。

 

8. Make a loss(虧本)

 

Example:

There's no way you can make a loss on this deal. 

你不可在這筆交易中虧損。

 

9. Make a profit(賺錢)

 

Example:

As you can see, you will need to sell more than 1,000 pieces of your product or services if you want to make a profit. 

如你所見,要想獲利,你將需要出售1,000多種產品或服務。

 

10. Suffer losses (遭受損失)

Example:

Aviation industry (航空業)expected to suffer losses of more than 3 billion.

航空業預計將遭受超過30億的損失。

 

11. Join forces (協力;合作)

 

Example:

Schools will join forces to promote e-Learning.

學校將攜手推廣電子學習。

 

12. Come to an end(告一段落)

 

Example:

The campaign has finally come to an end. Thank you all so much for your support. 

活動終於結束了,非常感謝你的支持。

 

13. Come to a compromise(妥協)

 

Example:

After many years of discussions, we have finally come to a compromise.

經過多年的討論,我們終於達成了妥協。

 

14. Go bankrupt(破產)

Example:

Without the help of generous investors, the company would have gone bankrupt. 

沒有慷慨的投資者幫助的話,公司將會破產。

 

15. Attract investors (吸引投資者)

 

Example:

If you want to attract investors, you are going to need to show them where you have a competitive advantage in your market. 

如果你想吸引投資者,則需要向他們展示你在市場上具有競爭優勢的位置。
