In 1917, during World War I, Kafka suffered from tuberculosis and had two consecutive days of massive hemorrhaging in his lungs. For recuperation, he moved to a farm in the village of Zürau in northwestern Bohemia, managed by his sister. By December, Kafka decided to call off his wedding plans for the second time, officially breaking up with his first fiancée. Throughout 1918, Kafka did not keep a diary. What happened to him during his time at the ranch?
This creative work is set against the backdrop of Kafka's days at the ranch, focusing on the blank period when he did not write in his diary. From the perspective of a creative team in the year 2025, it presents their imaginative exploration of Kafka to the audience. The starting point of this creation is Kafka's 'Letter to His Father', and by delving into Kafka's complex emotions towards his father, the creators further studied his other letters and diaries, attempting to understand a person in a manner akin to blind men feeling an elephant.
Thus, this work is not solely an adaptation of a single literary work by Kafka but an original performance inspired by the author, delving into themes of humanity, the past (1917-1918) and the present (2025), and the connection between there (Zürau Farm) and here (Pokfulam Farm).
A chameleon and an African leopard made a bet, saying that the ox dared not cross the road, having seen grass but never trodden on sand, with the needles of cacti pricking its chin.
A heron passed by, placing branches on the firewood, and someone lit a fire, but it spread to the mountains.
Flickering shadows.
