The National Association of Realtors said existing home sales rose 2.4% in September to an annual rate of 5.17 million units, the strongest reading since September of last year.
Sales were 1.7% below those for September of last year.
The median home price rose 5.6%in September from a year ago, but that was down from the double-digit growth seen for much of 2013.
