Yau Ma Tei Police Station
Yau Ma Tei Police Station was built in 1922, adjacent to a typhoon shelter. This was a place where typhoon signals were hoisted in the past. The colonial structure was in sharp contrast to its surrounding ‘tong lau’ (Chinese-style tenements), making it the landmark of the neighbourhood. In the 60s and 70s, gangsters were active and posed a great threat to the district. A number of well-known Chinese detective sergeants including Lui Lok, Hon Sum and Ngan Hung were stationed at Yau Ma Tei Police Station, making it the primary target of Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC)’s work when it was first established. Days of corruption have become history. Yau Ma Tei Police Station was declared a Grade 2 historic Building in 2009. Central-Kowloon Route was planned to run through the underground of the Police Station in 2020 according to its construction plan. After several rounds of consultation, Yau Ma Tei Police Station will be preserved as an important landmark that keeps our memories alive.
