The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 274,000 for the week ended 16 May, the Labor Department said.
The four-week moving average of claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it irons out week-to-week volatility, fell 5,500 last week to 266,250. That was the lowest level since April 2000.
Continuing claims fell 12,000 to 2.21 million in the week ended 9 May. That was the lowest level since November 2000.
